There is a lot of focus on the lower back whenever anyone is talking about back pain or strain. However along with many lower back pathologies there is a related upper back pathology which is contributing and exacerbating the problem. Upper back tightness and excessive rounding or kyphosis occurs in the upper back compromising the biomechanics of the spine and causing additional strain and a tendancy to injur the lower back. Upper back tightness and pain, also called Thoracic strain is very common and is generally caused by years of poor posture, sitting at a desk or a computer for long periods, breastfeeding and overtightness of the chest muscles . Many therapists treat only the area of pain however if we don't address the underlying causes of the problem then we doom ourselves to recurring pain and strain. Therefore at Living Energy Pilates we address spinal pathologies from all angles. During an an initial Assessment we identify the movement available throughout the entire spine and identify movements that are restricted or inhibited in some way. During your pilates program, after we have successfully stabilised an injured area, we gradually begin to introduce movement to parts of the spine which require re-education. By doing this we optimise movement throughout the entire spine taking the strain away from injured segments and returning the spine and its owner, you, tytpically back to better than normal movement and function.
